Vows This book was inspired by a quote from William Wordsworth's journals. The Irish poet David Whyte quoted this passage in his CD series "Clear Mind, Wild Heart" and I was totally captivated by his reading of it. In it, Wordsworth is speaking about making the decision to rebel against society's expectations and follow the call to be a poet even though that path did not seem to offer the same security as opting to work a normal job. This was particularly significant for me at the time because I was at a place where I needed to make some tough decisions about whether to keep focusing on freelance graphic design or shift my focus and take myself seriously as a fine artist. Wordsworth's understanding that the call to be an artist is a sacred trust spoke deeply to me. It is made doubly special because this is the first of my handmade books to be purchased by a major collection. One of the edition was purchased by the University of Denver Penrose Library Special Collections.

The text reads: I made no vows, But Vows were then made for me. Bond unknown to me was given, That I should be, Else sinning greatly, A dedicated Spirit. And on I walked in Blessedness, That even yet….. Remains. |
